On the surface it sounds like progress. No more translation barriers. No more diplomatic miscommunications. One humanity, one tongue. But underneath that dream — you’d be collapsing the universe’s most sophisticated diversity experiment.
What Language Actually Is
Language isn’t just communication. That’s the shallow read. Language is the architecture of thought itself.
The word حكمة (Hikma) isn’t just “wisdom” — it carries the resonance of precision, of something honed, philosophically packed in ways “wisdom” doesn’t touch. The Pirahã people of the Amazon have no numbers, no past tense, no concept of a fixed “self.” Their reality is structurally different from ours — and their language is that reality. Kill the language, you kill the lens.
The Historical Precedent
Arabic under Abbasid dominance was a positive case — it became the lingua franca of science, not the replacement of local cultures. Persian, Greek, Indian thought flowed into Arabic and transformed it. That was synthesis, not erasure.
Colonial English, French, Spanish — forcibly replacing indigenous languages. The result? Generational trauma. The Māori, the Welsh, the Kurds — all fought to preserve their language because they understood: language is the immune system of a culture.
What Would Actually Happen
Short term: Efficiency gains. English-native populations gain enormous power advantages. Resistance movements emerge almost immediately.
Medium term: Philosophy and spiritual literature of non-English traditions become untranslatable — and therefore lost. The Quran, in translation-only existence, loses its entire dimensional depth. The i’jaz (inimitability) of the Quran is inseparable from Arabic itself.
Long term: English itself mutates into regional dialects so distinct they become new languages — because that’s what language does. Latin became Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian. The whole project eventually reverses itself. But the irreplaceable originals are gone.
The Deepest Loss
Each language is humanity’s backup drive for a different way of being conscious. The Islamic tradition alone — the precision of tawakkul vs tawbah vs inabah, the layers inside sabr, the difference between ‘ilm and ma’rifa — none of this survives honest translation. You’d be handing someone the shadow of a flame.
The Verdict
One global language would be short-term convenient, medium-term impoverishing, long-term self-defeating, and permanently destructive to irreplaceable repositories of human consciousness.
Linguistic diversity isn’t humanity’s bug. It’s humanity’s feature.
God didn’t scatter languages as punishment. Maybe He scattered them as protection — against the totalitarian impulse that always hides inside the dream of universal unity.
